Not sure where to start? Try these tips for a smarter, safer home!

Update exposed outlets to GFCI. If you’ve got standard outlets installed in moisture-prone areas (such as the ones outside your home and in the bathroom), this is a quick fix that is also incredibly important for your safety. These special outlets dramatically decrease the risk of electrical shock, and today’s electrical code actually requires them to be installed or upgraded in such areas. Don’t forget to reset them monthly to make sure that your GFCI outlets are operating correctly! If you experience problems with your outlets or need outlet repair, don’t hesitate to give us a call.

Upgrade your light bulbs. Not using LED lights? This simple, do-it-yourself improvement decreases energy consumption and lowers your electrical bill. LED bulbs are initially more expensive, but they last nearly 50 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. You’ll be especially grateful during the summer months, as they also emit less heat. They’re safer, too; you’re at a lower risk of an electrical fire, and they’re less likely to shatter.

Use surge protectors. Power surges and lightning strikes happen, and your most valuable electronics and appliances are definitely at risk if you’re not using surge protectors. For added protection, consider a whole-home surge protector device wired to your home’s electric box. They’re not cheap, but they’re far less expensive than a new computer.

Replace your batteries. If you haven’t swapped out the ones in your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, get this done as soon as possible. This should be done, at minimum, once per year. If you haven’t updated the detectors themselves in several years, now is the time. The latest models are more reliable and more energy-efficient than ever!

Get in a routine. Turn off lights when you leave a room. Unplug “vampire” appliances that continue to use electricity when you’re not using them, especially if you’re leaving town. A few common-sense measures can dramatically decrease your energy consumption and help regulate your home’s temperature in the upcoming warmer months, too.

How to Hire the Right Electrician https://staleyelectric.com/hire-right-electrician/ Wed, 25 Jan 2017 21:10:07 +0000 https://staleyelectric.com/?p=1710

Are you needing an outlet repair or a dimmer installation? When you hire an electrician you want to make sure to get the job done right. Finding the best person to get the job done can be a hassle, but when you ask the right questions it can save you time and money, and you can find an electrician you can trust.

Ask to see a proof of insurance and a license. Make sure your contractor’s license and proof of insurance are up to date and ask what their insurance policy covers in the case that something happens.

What previous work has the contractor done? Ask for a list of references from previous jobs so that you can check out past work the contractor has done.

What kind of specialized jobs have they completed? Some electrical jobs are more complicated than others. If you have a job that needs more work than your typical outlet repair, make sure your contractor is right for the job.

Do they provide 24/7 support? Electrical problems can arise at any minute. Being able to talk to someone and resolve the problem or to schedule at any time is important.

Get an estimate. Ask for a quote for each project you have as well as parts and labor. Get the terms of your job in writing so that you and the contractor both understand what is expected of the job and the price.

Whether you need an electrician for a small repair, an electrical upgrade, or any other home electrical fix, Staley Electric can help! Staley Electric has been serving Central Arkansas for 64 years and is proud to be an award-winning residential and commercial electrician company. How You Know It’s Time to Replace Your Outlets https://staleyelectric.com/know-time-replace-outlets/ Sun, 03 Jun 2018 13:20:42 +0000 https://staleyelectric.com/?p=1976

Are you wondering whether or not it’s time to replace an old outlet? While some signs may be obvious, others may be hidden beneath the surface. We’ve compiled a list of signs that let you know it’s time to replace your outlets.

Two Prong Outlets

We mean it, change them!! Two-pronged outlets are ungrounded. What this means is they are at a very high risk of shock, which could ruin appliances. Even if you have a surge protector, that will not protect an ungrounded electrical system. Not only do you have to replace a two-prong outlet, you will also have to have the electrical panel rewired.

Outlets are hot to the touch

We know not many people check the temperature of their outlets, but it’s time to start! Outlets that are hot to the touch are a sign of electrical trouble. This is usually due to loose or damaged wires which can be a huge fire hazard!

Loose Outlets

Everyone has experienced the frustration of a loose outlet, that kind that plugs fall out of no matter the appliance. This is the most commonly ignored problem when it comes to outlets because it doesn’t seem like a big deal. When in reality, a loose connection can put your house at major risk of starting on fire. So replace those loose outlets!!

Outlets are discolored from heat.

If the outlet or surrounding area on the wall is any bit discolored, this is a serious warning sign your outlet is burned, damaged or not installed correctly. This is a putting your home at a huge risk of starting on fire. Never even attempt to use a discolored outlet, losing your home is not worth it! Contact us and a Staley Electrician will be out to have it inspected and addressed immediately.

Sparks, smoke, or burning smells when using outlets.

When plugging appliances into outlets always be sure to keep an ear out for sizzling or popping sounds, this is an indicator that a fire is waiting to happen. Turn off your power and have a Staley Electrician come out to inspect your outlets immediately.

Warning Signs That You Need New Wiring https://staleyelectric.com/warning-signs-need-new-electrical-wiring/ Tue, 18 Sep 2018 09:26:38 +0000 https://staleyelectric.com/?p=1588 Simply put, your electrical wiring keeps your home running. However, if your wiring is old or damaged, it can cause major problems, including potential life-threatening hazards. Here’s a handy list of warning signs, helping you spot and correct problems due to outdated or potentially dangerous electrical wiring.

Frayed Wires
Your home’s electrical wires can fray due to age, heat, corrosion, or damage (such as bending). Nails or screws can also damage wires by pinching or piercing them. Even though it’s not an appealing thought for homeowners, rats and mice love to chew on electrical wires, as well. If you find any signs of rodent activity, check all of the wiring in the area to make sure that there isn’t any obvious damage. Damaged wires, whatever the reason, pose a serious threat in your home, and they should be carefully examined and replaced by a professional.

Excessive Heat Damage

Warm spots or scorch marks on outlets or switches are a huge warning sign and indicate unsafe wiring conditions. Outlets and switches should be cool to the touch. If you notice any the signs of heat damage, call an expert electrician immediately, and refrain from touching the area.

Tripping Circuit Breakers

If your circuit breaker keeps tripping, your home’s circuits could be overloaded. A licensed electrician can evaluate the situation and make any necessary improvements to your circuit breakers, or they may even suggest that your circuit panel be replaced if it’s outdated or potentially dangerous.

Smoke
Smoke is a definite sign of trouble with your home’s electrical wiring. If smoke is coming from an outlet, appliance, or along your baseboards, contact a professional as soon as possible. When smoke is first sighted, turn off all appliances and investigate the area for obvious problems, but avoid touching any wires. It is recommended that you turn off your home’s main circuit breaker until you determine the source of the smoke while you wait on an electrician to arrive.
Dimming Lights

If the lights dim whenever you use a particular outlet, you may be overloading the circuits or wiring. If this occurs, check the wiring and circuit breaker and contact an electrician.

Loose Connections

With time, the connections between wires and switches or outlets tend to loosen up. Make sure all outlet covers and switch plates are in good condition, and ensure that the wires are securely inside. Any missing, cracked, or broken plates should be replaced as soon as possible.

Strange Noises

If you hear any popping, crackling, sizzling, or buzzing coming from your outlets, switches, or appliances, there could be a serious problem. Turn off the electricity in that affected area, and call a licensed electrician.

“Staley Electric has done several different projects for us here at our home. I decided I wanted to light the entire crawl space. They were kind enough to steer me in a different direction so the crawl space didn’t become a bigger project than it necessarily needed to be. We were in the process of doing our chimney, and they ran electricity to the top of our chimney so we could put a blower on the top of that. They just do what needs to be done in order to make it a seamless process! You know you don’t want switches in weird places, and it’s aesthetically pleasing when they finished the job, which is something that’s important to me.” – Britney, Staley Customer

What Is Home Automation? https://staleyelectric.com/what-is-home-automation/ Mon, 29 Jul 2019 16:28:35 +0000 https://staleyelectric.com/?p=2812 Home automation is a trending option for homeowners because it improves your home’s energy-efficiency, increases the lifespan of light bulbs, and ultimately saves you more money in the long-run. This technology allows you to preset your electronics to turn on and off during certain times of the day, so you can come home to a well-lit, comfortable environment, all while using less electrical energy during the times you’re not home. Home automation is our number one recommendation for people wanting to reduce their monthly electric bills. We sat down with Brent Staley to explain more about our home automation options.

“Today I want to talk to you a little bit about home automation. Everybody needs to be in the know now and needs to see everything on their app. At Staley, we have the ability to install doorbells that have a camera allowing you to see who’s at your door and what’s going on outside. It will alert you if somebody walks onto your front porch.

We can install smoke detectors that will alert you if there is an issue in your home. They also light up like an occupancy sensor in case somebody is walking through the hallway, acting as a nightlight. We have switches and outlets that can be controlled by your phone so you can schedule when lights come on and when lights go off. We install Nest cameras so you can see your camera systems on your phone. Lastly – and I think this is a cool one – we can install a wireless device on your home generator. You can see when it exercises, and when it’s working, when it needs maintenance, and all of the data that you could ever possibly need.

The reason we do home automation is because more and more people want to know what’s going on in their home when they’re not there. It’s just a great security feature to be able to know who’s at your door. Is there a fire, is there smoke, is my generator running? Is it not? Can I turn my lights off while I’m not at home, or did I forget to turn something off that I can turn off using my phone? We’re seeing more and more people adopting this type of technology.”

“Spring” into Action: Electrical Safety Tips for Spring Cleaning https://staleyelectric.com/spring-into-action-electrical-safety-tips-for-spring-cleaning/ Tue, 30 Mar 2021 14:00:00 +0000 https://staleyelectric.com/?p=3806 Every year, when spring comes around, many households set out to do a little spring cleaning. What they may not prioritize, however, is any necessary electrical “cleaning” to decrease safety hazards at home.

With that said, there are several things you can do on your own to check for electrical safety. Here are some of our top suggestions to implement within your home.

Inspect Your Cords & Plugs

In order to prevent electrocution, electrical fires, and other safety hazards, it is best to check your cords and plugs regularly. This includes ensuring there are no frays or exposed wiring where there should not be. Any signs of damage are a red flag and should not go ignored. If damaged, it is best to replace them with new ones that work with your electrical wiring.

Note: Ensure all cords do not pose a threat as a tripping hazard.

Address The Clutter

Your extension cords and power strips should not be overworked. Try not plug too many items into one strip, but rather split up how many items are plugged into each extension cord within the room. That way, you can effectively reduce the chances of a fire hazard, and it does not compromise the integrity of your electrical wiring throughout the home.

Tangled cords are another cause for safety concerns. When this happens, it can weaken the equipment, lead to damaged or frayed cords, and ultimately, a possible fire hazard. The best thing to do is to have cords neatly organized with appropriate clips or ties, so they are out of the way and can not intermingle with one another.

Misplaced Cords

Sometimes, the outlets may not be laid out in the most suitable places for your appliances. Certainly, extension cords provide a temporary alternative solution, but it is not recommended to use them long-term. If you have inconveniently located electrical outlets, having a licensed electrician come out is a great idea! An electrician can review your home’s electrical wiring and offer upgrade opportunities. For the Little Rock, Arkansas area, our team has you covered!
